Gross Motor: Hula Hoop Tunnel

We have had many days where we were stuck inside and unable to get out. This winter has been a long one. Something fun we have been doing is changing up some of our favorite activities. We have hula hoops in the house and we use them a lot for various activities.

Today is about changing things up and having a different activity with them. We made a hula hoop tunnel to crawl, walk and squirm through.

This is perfect indoor activity that you can set up many times. My girls love doing different activities with same gross motor equipment.

What you need for this activity: hula hoops and masking tape.

Crawling

The first thing they did was all go through the hula hoops any way they wanted. This was fun and everyone was creative about it. This made them think of what they wanted to do.

Bear Walking

We did some bear walking through the tunnels next! This was fun and they had to do some thinking about how high they were going to be.

Duck Waddle

This was a challenge for them but I think they really liked it. You were close to the ground and you had to think about where you feet were going to be and where the hula hoop was.

Walk Between the Hoops

Next we walked between the hula hoops. This was a challenge with the rug because the would some times the hoops would start to move a little bit.

Do What They Want

I always end with letting them pick an activity they want to do. This lets them think about what they would want to do. I also keep those ideas around for when I do the activity again. They did one set a long lunge and the other time they crawled through and jumped between the hula hoops.

Some post activity thoughts about this. It is easier done is not done on a rug that moves. When we do this again it will be on the floor and not on the rug. So that the hula hoops stay more upright, but it did make it a challenge for them to go through and not be touched by the hoop.
