The total solar eclipse is coming and this makes a simple and easy craft to make with kids. We did a different version with a solar eclipse painting.

But this is a slight twist and using pastels.

This craft is about when the moon moves in front of the sun and blocks the view of the sun from the Earth. This is a great craft to make with kids in PreK and older.

How we made the Total Solar Eclipse Pastel Craft

You will see the steps below we use the make the total solar eclipse pastel craft.

Cut out a White Circle

We used white cardstock to make our circle for part of the craft. We used a bowl to make a size that would work great for the craft.

We traced a bowl on white cardstock and then cut out the circle.

I have seen people use a paper plate for this as well.

Lightly Glue the Circle on the Black Paper

We put only a light amount of glue on the back on the while circle. We used a glue stick to help with this. Then we placed the while circle on the black paper.

If you are doing this craft with older elementary kids you can have them hold the circle in place rather than using the glue.

Using the Calk Pastel on the Paper

You are going to start on the white circle and then push the white pastel out to the black paper. This is easier than going from the black to the white. It will help keep a clear circle on the paper.

Keep Going Around the Whole Circle

You want to keep going around the whole paper plate. This is simple and easy to do. Just keep making strokes with the pastel until the you have gone around the whole circle.

You can see which parts are done as you are putting the pastel on the black paper.
