Small World Play with the Wild West
This months theme was a lot of fun for the girls we read several different books for the wild west theme. We read several books for this months theme. It was fun to find new books every time we went to the library. It was fun to learn about the different native nations, the cowboys, pioneers and various other parts of the wild west.
The main book that we read and used to help us keep track of our learning was A Visual Dictionary of the Old West (Crabtree Visual Dictionaries). I liked the book because it looks at several different parts of the history of the era. It was a great read for learning history. We also read If You Traveled West In A Covered Wagon because we had ancestors that traveled west in the wagons.
What you need for this activity: Safari Ltd Wild West TOOB, sand and container for the sand to be in.
The first activity we did was look over all the people, animals and items in the Safari Ltd Wild West TOOB. We talked about the names and then we read the book A Visual Dictionary of the Old West (Crabtree Visual Dictionaries) and matched the figures up to the pages. We talked about the pictures and what we read. This is great for older and younger. For my older girls I had them tell me something about what they put on the page. For my youngest we talked about why they matched up.
Next we made our own wild west scene. It was lot of fun to do this. We name each item as it was placed. They did lots learning and rearranging. They each picked out one item they really liked. They made tracks with the animals and had the wagon train make it to the native people.
