Mummy Sorting Nouns: Person, Place, or Thing with Mummies In the Morning
One thing I love about the Magic Tree House books is that we learn so many new words while reading them. You can read books and see new words and learn about them. I love how it defines a lot of them while you read.
Last month we did nouns vs verbs and this month I thought it would be fun to something similar. We are going to work on different types of nouns: person, place, and thing.
We have included links to some of the products and resources we have used with this activity. If you purchase via the links we may earn a small commission.
We are in the third book in the Magic Tree House chapter book series. It is Mummies in the Morning (Magic Tree House, No. 3).
We love the Egypt theme. We take trips to the MFA and always stop in Ancient Egypt. I made a themed Egypt Pack a few years back and it can always be used with this activity.
I took a lot of words from book to be a part of this activity. So after you read the book they should be familiar. That way it is not a totally new word you are hearing or seeing for the first time.
You have three mummies with person, place, and thing written on them. The story is about a mummy and bring something to it. I recommend laminating the page to help it last longer.
Then you have scrolls with words written on them. There is a mix of 4 or 5 words for each area. You can see an example of each of the words. We printed the cards on white cardstock. I like to laminate them to help them last through several uses.

How we used the Mummy Person Place or Things Noun Sorting
My youngest just loves sensory bins. She will play in them for hours. So went I can add that sensory part to learning it helps it stick more for her. I put the cards in a bin with rice and the Ancient Egypt TOOB.
She would reach into the bin and pull out a word. We would talk about the words and where it was from the book. It is an easy way to see if they remember the vocabulary we saw in the book.
After looking at the words we then sorting them to the correct mummies. This was a fun way to do learning the different types of nouns. Kids can have fun with the vocabulary and learning with the story.
She also had a fun time sorting the items from the Ancient Egypt TOOB. Most of them were people or things. But it was still a fun idea to do.
Finally, we finished up with writing about a few of the words. I had her pick a word and write a sentence or two about the noun. This is a great review at the end of the learning.
