June Poppins Book Nook: The Great Outdoors
In college, I took a class on outdoor literature and loved it. Part of the class was getting out and exploring areas in the great outdoors. There are lots of great books on the outdoors. Which is perfect for this months Poppins Book Nook Theme: The Great Outdoors.
In the class I learned lots of fun ways to put writing in with hiking and exploring. There were many different stages in the class. The final project was a backpacking trip. We read several books in the class. My two favorite books were Walden and Desert Solitaire.
I have started reading some of Walden with my girls plus I’ve read a few other kids books about Walden Pond with them: If You Spent a Day with Thoreau at Walden Pond (Christy Ottaviano Books), Henry Builds a Cabin, The Trouble with Henry: A Tale of Walden Pond and Henry David’s House. The girls love reading each of the books.
I’ve been looking forward to this theme for months! I have a hard time picking just one book that we will explore. I know the girls want to do the Walden Pond books again. So we may be doing that again. But there are many different books to explore when you talk about the great outdoors. I love that there are kids books on the National Parks. I love getting out and exploring a few of the parks.
Here are are few Great Outdoors books that we will be reading. Yes, there are some older books in this list.
This is most likely my favorite theme of the year!
