I love that there are loads of ways to work on counting. It is a skill that works from going up in numbers to addition to other math skills.

And kids love different ways to work on counting.

Today I have a fun mat that has two types of counting, tracing and writing numbers. It is an ice cream cone themed counting mat! And it is great summer activity for counting.

These mats have numbers from 1 to 10. These are great for the early counting and writing number activities.

Each of the counting mats has a number they are focusing on. It has an area for tracing and writing the number, filling in the ten frame, and counting objects to match. This gives you many different ways to work on the same number.

You can use these mats in many ways. And I wanted to show you a few different ones.

You can laminate the mat or put them in sheet protectors. This allows you to reuse them. If you are going to use them a lot then laminating might work best. If you want to switch up the mats and want to save money then use the sheet protectors.

I also like to store my mats in sheet protectors.

Now, these ice cream counting mats are flexible in how you use them. You can use part of the mat or all the mat. There are several ways to use each part. I love using dry erase markers with the tracing and writing. You can give them a fun color to use for the tracing.

I love using things that I have on hand. You can use clear counters on the mat and unifix cubes on the ten frames. They are both something we have on hand and use all the time.

Another way to use these is with pom-poms and mini erasers. I use a pompoms to make the scoops and unifix cubes to fill in the ten frames.

Another item we have around a lot is glass gems and mini erasers! We use the glass gems for the cone and the mini erasers for the ten frames.

You can also use playdough to make the counting area and then unifix cubes in the ten frames. It makes it a fun sensory activity. They can make the balls and then count them out.

If you don’t want to reuse the makes then trace the numbers with a marker, use dot marker for the ten frames and then dot marker on the mat!
