This is a great addition to the Hanukkah activities on the site.
I have been exploring Hanukkah with the girls. It has been a great fun. We made a Hanukkah Sensory Bin to go with the book Light the Menorah.
What you need to make your Hanukkah Sensory Bin
- Hanukkah foam stickers
- dreidels
- mini menorah
- candles
- Hanukkah Puzzle
- yarn white and blue
- Light the Menorah
(Please remember the with small items younger children need to be watched).
Ways to Explore the Hanukkah Sensory Bin
They explored what was in the bin. There are many different textures that they could explore: soft, hard, squishy, and slippery.
They did the puzzle and named the pieces. It is a good way to build vocabulary that they might not always use.
They pulled out the nine candles from the bin. It took a while to find all nine of them.
We counted the candles they found. We talked about why there at 9 candles and not just eight. That the 9th candle is the Shamash.
We read the book and matched up the candles on each of the pages. This was a great building up on numbers and to see how the candles go up each day. We talked about how many candles they might use every night.

Thanks I some times never know what will happen we get started.
Great sensory bin, Cassie! I love how you combined the sensory bin with the hands-on counting activity. I featured your post and sensory bin photo in my Montessori-Inspired Hanukkah Activities post at http://livingmontessorinow.com/2012/12/10/montessori-monday-montessori-inspired-hanukkah-activities/
