What is pre-writing?

I remember the first time I heard the word pre-writing in school. My first thought was writing a paper or starting a paper.

But for young kids, pre-writing is the skill to build to work up to writing letters and other types of writing. It also teaches the direction that we read.

You can start a lot of those skills with fine motor activities with playdough and other small motor movements. But a lot of those skills are working up to prewriting with lines. Then working on more fine motor skills that help to do better with writing and reading later in life.

You start out with thick prewriting lines and work to thinner prewriting lines. Then to prewriting patterns that work into writing letters.

Spring Prewriting Printables for Preschool, Prek, & Kindergarten

Ways to use the Spring Prewriting Printables

You will see a few ways to use the spring prewriting printables. And you can always use what is best for you kids.

Prewriting Does Not Have To Be Boring

Prewriting does not have to be boring. Be sure to change up the tools you use with your writing practice. Try using q-tip, triangular crayons or pip-squeaks markers. We have fun changing how we do the activities and so should you! You could always just put stickers on the lines.

Setting Up a Prewriting Center

You can see I have set up a simple prewriting center. It has our favorite pencil and a pencil grip to help hold the pencil.

You can do it without the grip but it is handy to have around for those that struggle to hold the pencil correctly.

Tracing the Spring Prewriting Lines with Markers

You can use markers on the prewriting lines. You can use fun spring colors like pink and purple.

You can use the fine line markers on the thin lines.

You can also use markers on the thick line. You can use the marker to trace each of the lines.

You can see that the thick lines work great with the marker.

You can use the lines and markers that work best for you kids.

Challenge Kids by Prewriting with Watercolors Painting

A fun way to change prewriting for kids who still need some help but might not want to trace the lines.

Add watercolors and a paintbrush for them to paint the lines. We have done this a lot and it can be a challenge and it is different.

But the smaller paint brush can make this a challenge. You can start with simple prewriting lines and work up to harder prewriting lines.

Hands-on With Playdough on the Prewriting Worksheets

You can have kids make playdough snakes and have them match the different prewriting lines. A fun way to add a different fine motor into the mix.

Use the Spring Prewriting Worksheets for Cutting Practice

You can add scissors and then let kids cut the prewriting lines. You can do the thin prewriting lines or the thick prewriting lines. This is where you pick the lines to challenge or lines they need at that time.

You can always trace the lines first and then cut the lines.

Hands-on with Mini Erasers

You can add mini erasers to the mix. You can line the lines with mini erasers. We get a lot of our erasers from Target, but you can find some on Amazon.

You can have them line each line and then take the erasers off and start on a different set of lines.

Reuse the Spring Prewriting Printables

You can reuse any of the spring prewriting worksheets. You can laminate the pages or use a sheet protector.

Then you can trace the lines with dry erase markers. You can use the ones that work best for the lines they are doing.

And you can wipe off the lines and do them again. This is a great idea for a prewriting center.
