What are short vowel sounds?
Short vowel words are any word that doesn’t allow the vowel within it to generate that vowel’s long vowel sound. Some CVC short vowel words are pen, cat, and bug.
This set has six CVC short vowel sound words. The CVC words are hen, log, bag, map, pig, and nut.
What are long vowel sounds?
A long vowel is a vowel sound that is pronounced the same way as the name of the letter itself. CVCe words have a long vowel sound and examples are bake, hike, and cute.
This set has six CVCe long vowel sound words. The CVCe words are cake, bike, wave, file, cube, and cone.
Pot of Gold Short and Long Vowel Picture Sorting Mat Printable
You have a sorting mat. It has two pots of gold for kids to sort the coins to. You can see the short vowel words will go on the left and the long vowel words on the right.
Short Vowel and Long Vowel Gold Coins Printable
You have six coins for each vowel type. You have the short vowel coins and the long vowel coins. They have a gold coin and then the picture of the short or long vowel word.
These work best printed on cardstock. If you plan to use them a lot then laminating is recommended.

You have a fun recording sheet you can use for the coins. Each side has six spaces to record all the coins.

Setting Up the Sorting Short Vowels & Long Vowel Activity
You can see that it is super simple to set up the activity. You can see the sorting mat and the coins on the side.
Sorting Short Vowels & Long Vowel Coins
You are going to have kids say what the picture is one the coin. Then they can decide if it is a short vowel or a long vowel word. Then they sort the pictures to the correct side.
You can also review the words after they finish.
Recording the Sorting Short Vowels & Long Vowel Coins
You can also have them fill out the recording sheet when they do the sorting. This is a great way to see if they can sound out the words and spell them.
You could also put the coins on a ring and flip through the coins on the ring and record what they found.
A few other ideas you can try would be to sort the coins and then have them say a rhyming word for each coin.
Say what the vowel is. They can tell you each of the vowels for each word. You could also work on ending sounds and beginning sounds.
