What is a CVC Word?
CVC words are words that have a consonant vowel consonant pattern. They have easy to sound out consonants with a short vowel sound in the middle. They don’t have any tricky blends or digraphs for kids to work around.
They are considered simple words that can be used with early readers to help sound out and decode words.
They have short vowel sounds that make sounding out words easy.
You are going to find words like cat. Kids can sound out the letters C A & T. And then blend the sounds together to make the word.
Some CVC words that kids learn are bag, map, sat, sad, pan, etc.

How to Set Up the CVC Short Vowel Word Game
Here is a look at setting up the CVC word game. You can see the clear counters, a die, and one unifix cube. You could use anything for the game token. Seasonal erasers are also fun to use on the CVC game.
If you need a die you can get one from the number writing dice.
Playing the CVC Short Vowel Word Games
You have your place at the starting spot. You roll the die and then move that many spaces around the outside of the board.
They use the clear counter to cover the CVC word that matches the picture on the board where they landed.
You play until you have four words in a row. There is only one word that matches for each picture on the board game.
Record the Words you Land On
Don’t forget the recording list you can use with the game. It lets you write the words that you land on. It is great for handwriting and working spelling CVC words.
Play the CVC Games with Dot Markers
If you are going to use the CVC word games just one time you can have kids color or dot marker the CVC game. They can move around the outside and then dot the words on the center.
Reuse the CVC short Vowel Games
You can reuse the CVC games by putting them in sheet protectors. They can move around the board and then circle the words with dry erase markers as they find them. It is a simple and easy way to reuse the page.
