What are counting mats?

The counting mats are a fun and colorful counting activity for preK and kindergarten children to provide an opportunity to count out loud and develop number recognition.

These mats work on numbers from 1 to 10. They are simple and easy to use. They have a playdough number, write number word at the top, ten frame, and an area to build the number. You have loads of skills in just one mat.

I recommend printing the counting mats on cardstock and laminating them.

Ways to Use the Car Counting Mats Printable

I’m going to show a few ways that we use this car counting printable. The set has traffic lights and cars you can cut out but we are using unifix cubes and Learning Resources Mini Motors Counting and Sorting Fun Set.

Setting up the Counting Mats

There are so many ways to use the mats. And I wanted to show you how I set this mat up for a center. I have the mat in a sheet protector, but we can laminate them. I store all 10 mats in a sheet protector to make them easy to find and pull out. You can also see the playdough, unfix cubes and cars we are using with the mat.

Filling out the Counting Mats

Now you can see how you fill out the counting mat with all the items. The fun part is that you don’t have to do it all. You can do just the parts that make sense for what you need.

You can see the playdough for the number, the unfix cubes for the ten frame and the cars on the road.
