Vowel teams are two vowels that work to make one sound. This is also called a vowel digraph since both vowels make the same sound.

The common vowel teams are: ai, ay, ea, ee, ie, oa, oe, ue, and ui.
These are some of the most common vowel teams that work together to make one sound.
The sound that vowel team words make is a long vowel sound. You will often teach the sounds that are similar at the same time.

Ways to Use the Gumball Vowel Team Game Printable
You will see a few ways to use this gumball vowel team game set with kids.
Preparing the Vowel Team Game
The best way to make sure you get long term use out of the vowel team game is to print the gumballs, candy jars and game board on cardstock and laminate them.
We used the stardust cardstock for our gumballs, gameboard and candy jars. The stardust cardstock is not totally white but a slight off white color as well.
You can print the writing page on copy paper. You could do white or use a colored copy paper for kids who don’t like white pages.
Setting up the Vowel Team Game
A very simple set up for the vowel team game is to give them the game board and the gumball.
You can use the gumballs color side up of have them flip the cards over.
Then you can use a mini erase or other small item to move around the game board.
How To Play the Vowel Team Game
You have kids use the top gumball. They pull the card and go to the gumball color. And then they say what the vowel team is.
You can then sort the gumball to the correct candy jar for that vowel team.
Writing the Vowel Team Letters on the Worksheet
You can also add in writing the gumball letters on the worksheet. Each gumball picture has a matching picture on the worksheet with the vowel team letters missing in the word.
Kids write in the correct vowel team words.
Since every gumball is on the vowel team worksheet you could do it as a center with just the gumballs and the vowel team worksheet. And have kids write in all the vowel combinations.
Vowel Team Sorting Activity
While you play the vowel team game you can sort the gumballs to each of the correct candy jars for each vowel team. A fun way to work on learning vowel teams.
The gumball sorting activity could also be done on its own.
