Free Printable Blend Ladders: Beginning Sounds
Consonant blends are one of the areas you learn after some of the basic CVC words. These are when you put two consonants together and each makes its own sound.
The free consonant blend ladders help with learning those beginning sound blends. Each of the ladders is a fun way to work on learning the blends sounds and making words with different vowel sounds.
The blends consonant ladders are ways for kids to work on the blend sound of the two letters with vowels.
The blend ladder printables are a great addition to the blend printables on the site.
We have included links to some of the products and resources we have used with this activity. If you purchase via the links we may earn a small commission.
What is the Consonant Blend?
Consonant blends are when you have two letters together and each still makes its own sound. So an example of a blend would be “bl”. You saw the b sound and the l sound when saying the word “blanket”.
The consonant blends are bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, & tr.

Ways to use the Consonant Blends Ladder Printables
You are going to see a few ways to use these consonant blends ladders. You can always use what is best for you.
Preparing the Blends Ladder Printables
I like to print the blends ladders on cardstock and laminate these blend ladders to help them last longer.
You can laminate and then cut out the blend ladder cards or cut out the blend ladder printables and them laminate. They last longer in blends learning center when they are laminated.
Setting up a Constant Blends Ladder Center
One way that I set up the blends ladders for a center is to give them just one ladder and several lacing letters. You can have them make sets of words or take one letter at a time down the ladder.
A lot of times the l blend words are some of the first blend words kids work on. You might want to start with those first.
Write the Blends Ladders Words
If you have laminated the blend ladder printables, you can have them use dry eraser markers on the ladder to write the words.
I like to use the small blends wall cards to help with the different blend words. The Blends ladder and wall card set also has recording sheets you can use
Making Short Vowel Blend Words
If you want to work on short vowel blend words, you can use the blends bookmarks that has short vowel blend word options. It helps kids with vowel sounds and is great for kids in first grade.
The blends bookmarks can also help with long vowel words helps you find a few words to make on the ladder as well. And that might be a great second grade ladder activity.

This is wonderful, can’t wait to use with my daughter!
I’m going to try this with my son! He is reading pretty well but struggles with some of the blends. I think this will be just what he needs! Thanks!
I love your site. Blends can be so tough for some children. Thanks for the resources. I caught up with you at Classroom Freebies.
I am running a contest for some prizes if you would like to enter!

Hi there,
I really like the look of these and have printed them to use.
I have one request. I really wish you would make some ladders with Consonant + vowel (CV), eg, ba, be, bi, bo, bu. This is how I prefer to teach blending rather than word families. Once children can say ‘ba, be, bi, bo, bu’ together, then they just hold the vowel and add the final consonant for CVC words. This is a much more seamless way to blend as then children don’t have any pauses between sounds. Is it possible for you to make some of these?
I have already made those. You can check them out here: https://www.3dinosaurs.com/wordpress/index.php/free-abc-phonics-ladders-learning-printables-blog-hop/
I also have CVC ladders with an ending letters together to add the first consonant for kids here: https://www.3dinosaurs.com/wordpress/index.php/free-cvc-word-family-ladder-printables/
