What is Cookie Cutter Painting?
Painting with a cookie cutter is an easy craft for kids to do. This gives a template, and the results are loads of fun.
Fish Watercolor Painting
Fish watercolor painting is painting inside fish cookie cutters with watercolor paints. A fun painting and fine motor activity for kids.
One of my favorite parts about cookie cutter painting is that they work on fine motor and creative without really knowing it. I am always needing to find a way for my oldest to get more fine motor activities in without her knowing it. She does not like me taking pictures of her for the blog much anymore but she will do the projects. The cookie cutter painting is one of her favorites to do and I don’t have to even bribe her to do them.

How we made the Fish Watercolor Painting
You shall see all the steps below we use to make the fish watercolor painting.
Holding the Cookie Cutter
You want to hold the on top of the cookie cutter or on the sides. But the big thing is about holding it is place well enough you can paint inside.
Paint inside the Fish Cookie Cutter
After you have the fish cookie cutter in place on the watercolor paper, you put the paint on the brush and then paint inside the cookie cutter.
We use a bigger brush that what comes in the watercolor sets. This makes is easier to spread the watercolor paint around inside the cookie cutter.
Pick up the Fish Cookie Cutter off the Paper
You then pick up the fish cookie cutter from the paper. You can see the outline of the fish on the paper.
If you have older kids doing this project you can have them use the watercolor brush to fix any spots of the fish they might not have got all painted.
Paint More Fish
After you have your first fish done you can them move on to painting more fish on the watercolor paper.
You might want to pick different parts of the paper for each new fish. This allows the fish below to dry.
And Just Keep Adding Fish
You can keep adding fish to the page! Plus you can use so many fun colors for the fish.
And because this is a fun project for kids. Let them decide how many fish they want to paint. It can be a few or lots that color the whole page.
Additional Steps for Older Kids
After the watercolor fish painting is done. You can let the fish watercolor painting dry. Once it is dry you can use a sharpie pen to trace around the fish and add other features like eyes, outline of fins and more.
