What are Even and Odd Numbers?
An even number is a number that can be divided by 2. These are numbers like 2, 4, 6, 8. These will be even numbers. 4 divided by 2 is 2. You will also find numbers that end in 0 are even.
An odd number is a number that can’t be divided by 2. These are numbers like 3, 5, 7, 9. These numbers can’t be divided by two evenly. They will always have a reminder. You will also find numbers that end in 1 are odd.
Another way to say this is that you can make equal pairs of numbers it is even. If you can’t make pairs for every number it is odd.

How we have used the Even and Odd Help Mat Printables
There are many ways to use these mats. But I love using these to teach the idea of even and odd.
Setting up the Even and Odd Help Mat Printables
Here is a look at how I set up the even and odd mat with number in the middle. I give them 10 unifix cubes and one 10-sided dice. Our die happens to come from the place value dice set.
A Rolling Even and Odd Math Game
I am using the set up from above. I have kids start by rolling the dice and looking at the number they got. You can use any die that has 10 sides.
They fill in the numbers in the middle on the ten frame to match the number 4.
You can see that the number is the same on each side. By having the same amount you explain that is even. You could also tell them they have two pairs
They can circle the number on the side of the mat as well.
You can see an example of how odd looks on the mat. This is an easy way for kids to see what is odd and even look like. You can see that there are not an even pairs of unfix cubes.
Use the Even and Odd Mat with Number Cards
You can use the even and odd mat printable to help with different activities for even and odd.
We used it with the firefly sorting recently. It was a great help when you need a visual look at the number.
Print the Mats on Colored Cardstock
Don’t feel that you have to limit yourself to just the white, because the even and odd mats are also in black and white you can use colored cardstock for those that like the color paper better than white paper. I love printing these off in my girls’ favorite colors to use.
