Craft Stick Books With Day of the Dragon King
One of my favorite parts about the Magic Tree House is that we travel and learn about the history and new things. This time we head to China.
There were so many fun ideas in the book about Ancient China but we thought the idea of the bamboo books was amazing.
Today we are showing you are craft stick books made for our Magic Tree House book and craft project.
The Craft Stick Books craft is a great addition to the Magic Tree House activities on the site.
We have included links to some of the products and resources we have used with this activity. If you purchase via the links we may earn a small commission.
This week’s Magic Tree House Books are Day of the Dragon King (Magic Tree House (R)) and you can also read China: Land of the Emperor’s Great Wall: A Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House 14: Day of the Dragon King (Magic Tree House (R) Fact Tracker)
This Magic Tree House Book is part of a series where the kids are looking for stories from the past. They are trying to save them.
We get to explore Ancient China. This is around the start of the building of the great wall of china and the emperor who build the clay army to protect him when he died. Those are both areas you can explore after reading the book.
One part of the book was learning about bamboo books! They were the first books in China before they made paper. We decided we would try to make some with craft sticks and see what happened.
What you need for this Craft Stick Book Craft:
- sharpie pen or fine line markers
- craft sticks
- yellow yarn
- scissors
How we made the craft stick books
First we picked out several crafts sticks for our books. We pick between 10 and 15 craft sticks.
We measured and cut and length of yarn and then folded it in half and made sure each side was even.
We placed the craft stick on the side of the yarn with the loop. We placed it near the end of the stick.
You are now going to weave in other sticks. You take the yarns and cross it so the bottom yarn is on the top and the top is on the bottom. Then you place a new stick by the cross yarn.
Then we added another stick and repeated the process until we had several sticks together. You can see how a few sticks look.
After you have finished the bottom you tie a loose knot to hold the yarn and sticks in place.
Now you repeat the first time of measuring the yarn. You could do this in advance if you are doing several kids at the same time.
You are then going to work on stringing the top of the sticks together. You start by putting the stick on the loop.
Now you continue as you did on the bottom on the top. The idea is to weave the stick together with the yarn.
Once you reach the end you tighten up the yarn on each side and then tie a knot. We cut the yarn shorter to help make this easier.
Finally, we wrote on our craft stick books. This was fun to do and a challenge because of how small the sticks are. But bamboo books would have been very tiny as well.
