Christmas Tree Vowel Sound Sorting: CVC vs CVCe

At a particular time in school, you start learning short and long vowel sounds. They are sometimes easy and sometimes hard. It is something that is fun to review now and then.

We have been working on CVC vs. CVCe at home. This Christmas tree sorting is a lot of fun for this activity. Plus it has a fun ornament and present theme for the sorting.

I love having hands on activities as much as no-prep activities. That is what makes these series fun is that I can be creative in what we are learning.

CVC vs. CVCe is something we have been working on. The long sounds vs the short sound of each of the words. It is fun to look at different pictures and ask if it is a long or short vowel sound. We do this with picture books every now and then.

Today I have this same activity just with the Christmas theme.

There are several ornaments and presents that each have a short or long vowel sound. I stuck with CVC and CVCe to keep with some of the reviews we have done.

As she picked up each item to sort I asked her what the picture was and the sound it made. She would tell me and put it on the correct page. There are 9 items to sort for each tree.

To help make these last longer you could laminate them. I often do for things we will be using a lot.

Another way to use this would be to mix up the ornaments and presents on the trees and have them sort it out correctly. You don’t always have to use this printable just one way. You could use the Christmas Writing paper to write out the different CVC and CVCe words.
