Castle Themed Sorting Noun & Verbs with Knight at Dawn
There are so many ways to learn with chapter books. I love that you can be flexible with them. We have been loving doing the Magic Tree House book activities.
Today I have a fun sorting activity with nouns and verbs. This is a great way to explore more about the words you are reading.
We have included links to some of the products and resources we have used with this activity. If you purchase via the links we may earn a small commission.
We are on the second book in the series: The Knight at Dawn (Magic Tree House, No. 2).
It is a great book to get a look into what life was like during the middle ages. There are so many words you can learn about with these books.
We thought it would be fun to do a little activity with some of the words. We picked a few nouns and verbs from the book to work on learning and using. Now the fun part is that you can do this without having read the book
All the nouns are things you find in medieval history. So loads of fun. Plus the verbs are all from the book and have a mix of verbs some of which are sight words. There are 10 cards of each type. You can see some example of some of the nouns below.
There is a fun sorting mat. This mat has a noun on one side and verb on the other. This is a great hands-on way to work on learning the types of words. If you plan on using this a lot I recommend that you laminate the mat and cards.
And lastly, there is a writing page. This lets you take a random noun and random verb and write a sentence with them. You can see the sheet we use for that here.
How we use the Castle Sorting Noun and Verbs
I love sensory bins so I put one together with Days of Old Toob, the Knight Toob, and rice. Then I mixed in our noun and verb cards.
She pulled out the card and told me if it was a noun or verb and put it on the mat where it went. I also asked if she might remember the word from the book.
Then she sorted the cards to the mat. We talked about all the words and how we saw them in the book.
After the cards were sorted we did a writing activity. We took to random cards from the piles and then wrote about the cards. I had some that were present tense and past tense. And we talked about which word she would like to use for the verbs if she could. It was fun to see the sentences she came up.

I love the writing prompt sheet to go with this. Great way to think about incorporating the grammar into a creative writing exercise
