Hands-On Fun With Candy Themed CVCC -CK Word Sorting
There are so many ways to learn words. I love having different learning centers that kids can work on. Sorting mats are always great to use. Kids also love to have different themed that they can use with the mats.
Today I have a fun set of mats that work on the ending sound of /ck/. It is an ending blend sound that is often called CVCC words.
Kids will have loads of fun with this candy jar sorting activity.
This is a part of the 5 Days of Candy Printables.
There are loads of activities you can do with a set of cards, mats, and worksheets. You can always mix up how you do them. Today’s printable has 15 sorting cards, 5 sorting mats, and a matching recording worksheet. This allows you to meet the needs of different kids.
There are 15 cards for kids to sort. They each end in the -ck. All the pictures are on pieces of candy.
There are 5 sorting mats. Each of the mats has a candy jar and one ending sounds on the mat. It is easy to see what mat is what.
How we used the Candy CVCC -CK Word Sorting Set
This set can be used just at hands-on sorting, sorting and recording or just recording the words on the sheet. I thought I would show you a few ways to use them.
There are many ways to set up the cards. I like to arrange the mats and then either have a stack of the cards or lay them out on the table. This time we went with a stack of cards. You can see an example of the cards laid out here.
You can just have them sorting the cards to the matching mats. This is simple and easy to do. They say the word and figure out the right mat to sort them too. A minor change for this would to be to sort the –CK words cards to the mats.
After the finished sorting, there will be three cards on each jar. That makes it no so overwhelming that kids can’t have fun doing the activity. Each jar will only have one of each color.
Once you are done sorting you can end there or you can have the kids recording the words on the recording sheet. There are 5 columns on the page with space to write three words for each ending sound.
Now say you don’t want to use the mats or worksheets you can just use the cards to play games. You might play old maid and match the sounds and have one set of sounds have 1 card to be the old maid. You can also use a card form the Baseball double ll set as the old maid.
You could just play a matching game with them and keep the extra card in. See if they can match the 3 cards without getting the baseball!
You could use the cards with the matching CVCC Word Family Coloring Pages as an additional way to work on the words.
