What is a sensory bin?
A sensory bin is typically a plastic tub or container filled with carefully selected materials and objects to stimulate the senses of children in preschool.
Sensory bins might have rice, water beads, corn, beans, or other types filled with small items.
Beach Kinetic Sand Sensory Bin
This fun sensory bin has kinetic sand which is great for building and shaping. Then, add these great acrylic shells to round out the sensory bin.
Sensory bins don’t have to be complicated with lots of different parts. And this is a great way to simultaneously look at different shells and colors in the bin.

Ways to Use the Beach Kinetic Sand & Shell Sensory Bin
You are going to see a few ways we use the sensory bin. Or activities that can be done with the sensory bin. But REMEMBER this is about sensory play. And if all you do is play with a sensory bin that is just fine!
Play in the Beach Sensory Bin
The best part about a sensory bin is just to play in it. There is no wrong or right way to use a sensory bin. It is for sensory play.
We use sensory bins for a calm down for post school and have used them from preschool up to other grades.
Scooping and pouring are one of our favorite sensory bin activities. You can feel the sand on your hands and listen to the items in the bin as they hit each other. The shells make a fun clank as they fall and hit other shells.
Shorting Shells by Shape
The shells come in four different colors. And it is fun to mix the shells in the sand and then have kids dig and then sort the shells. You can see how we picked corners of the bin for where the shells should go.
You can have them sort the shells outside of the bin as well.
Shorting Shells by Color
You can also have them sort the shells by color. There were four different types of colors with yellow, purple, blue and pink.
If you sort the shell by color you can also add in some fun by making patterns with the colors and shells.
Make imprints of the Shells in the Sand
Because you have four different shells, you can make imprints in the sand for the shells.
You could make patterns or fun drawings with the imprints. And have fun pushing the shells into the sand and doing sensory activities simultaneously.
Use the Shells to Make Shapes, Letters, or Numbers
You could use the shells to make shapes, letters, or numbers in the sand. You can say a shape and have them make it. Or provide a shape, and they can match it.
But Make Sure to Have Fun in the Sensory Bin
Let kids be creative the other ideas can make learning fun. But the idea of a sensory bin is for kids to explore and play. And this is a fun way to do it.
And it makes a great small world play for kids. And as you can see kids can be creative with the items they are given!
