Setting Up the Bird Addition & Subtraction Clip Cards

You can see below the addition and subtraction clip cards in a pile. There are clothespins to clip the cards and two colors of unifix cubes to use with building the questions.

You can use all these items with the math clip cards or not.

Clip the Bird Subtraction & Addition Clip Cards

You can see below that the two equations on the math clip cards will make kids think about am I adding or subtracting. You can give them similar equations together or separate the clip cards.

Addition Clip Card with Unifix Cubes

With the addition clip cards, you can use unifix cubes to check the answer. You use the two colors and give them the clip cards and the two colors of unifix cubes. They combined the two unifix cubes to make the answer.

You can tell them you want them in sets of 10 together and start a new column with the cubes that go above ten.

You can see that the cubes made a ten and a four. And that together they add up to 14.

Subtraction Clip Card with Unifix Cubes

You can use the unifix cubes with the subtraction cards as well. You can give them unifix cubes matching the first number in the equation. Then they take away as many unifux cubes that match the second number. The remaining cubes are the answer to the problem.

You can see we started with 9 unifix cubes and took away 5 cubes and had 4 cubes remaining.
