What are CVC words?

CVC words are words that have a consonant vowel consonant pattern. They have easy to sound out consonants with a short vowel sound in the middle. They don’t have any tricky blends or digraphs for kids to work around.

They are considered simple words that can be used with early readers to help sound out and decode words.

They have short vowel sounds that make sounding out words easy.

You are going to find words like cat. Kids can sound out the letters C A & T. And then blend the sounds together to make the word.

Some CVC words that kids learn are bug, map, sat, dog, pot, pan, etc.

This fun Candy Break the Code CVC Word Cards workds on CVC words in fun ways.

You have twelve candy jars with CVC words with a letter code. You use the beginning sound of the pictures to figure out the words on the jars.

You can see here one way to set up the learning center. You can have the candies with pictures and jars with the code.

You can have the recording sheet around or not. Plus you can use the ABC chart to help with the letter sounds if you need it. It will depend on the level the child is working at.

Matching CVC Candy to Candy Jar

You can see how the candies match the jars. You have the pictures with the letter sounds for c a t and then match the picture of the cat to the correct jar.

Record the CVC words on the Matching Worksheet

After you have done the matching you can record the words on the CVC worksheet. It has space for all 12 of the candy jars for kids to decode.

You can write in pencil or have fun writing in a colored marker. You could also print the recording sheet on a colored paper instead of white.
