What is Subitizing?

Subitizing is the ability to recognize a small group of objects without counting. This would be with dots, dice, tally marks as examples of groups of objects. Subitizing is part of the development of number sense.

Today’s number printable works on learning to match groups of objects to the correct number. You will find ice cream scoops to match to a numbered cone.

You will find tally marks, number words, dice, and random dots for the scoops to match the number on the cone.

I recommend printing on cardstock and laminating so you can use these over and over.

Ways to Use the Ice Cream Subitizing Practice Matching Cards Printable

I love that these subitizing cards are flexible in the ways that you use them. You can match them many different ways. And I’ll show you a few ways that you can use them.

Matching all All the Scoops to the Cone

One matching activity is to match all the ice cream parts. You can match all the scoops to the number cone. So they can match the number name, tally marks, dice, and dots.

Number Number Digit and Number Word

You don’t always have to match all the parts. And I thought I would show you some combinations. You can match the number digit and number name. So you can work or matching the reading of the number word with the number digit.

Matching Tally Marks and Number

You can count the tally marks and match them to the right cone. It is simple and easy to see what the different parts work together.

Matching Dots and Number

I love the random dots because they are fun to count and match to the cone. You can see groups of three really easy and do the grouping for adding up to the number.

Matching Numbers on Cones and Scoops on Rings

You can make this a great learning center by putting the scoops and cone on rings. It lets kids flip through and match the numbers. You can also put as few or as many of the scoops with the cone you want.
