Volcano: Watercolor & Q-Tip Painting with Vacation Under the Volcano
After building our volcano for our Magic Tree House activity. We decided we would do a little more study about volcanoes.
We looked into the shapes and sizes of volcanoes and where you can see them today.
After that, we deiced we would paint our own volcanoes erupting!
The Volcano: Watercolor & Q-Tip Painting is a great addition to the Magic Tree House Activities on the site.
We have been reading the Vacation Under The Volcano and you can also read Ancient Rome and Pompeii: A Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House 13: Vacation Under the Volcano. It has some great information about what happens when a volcano goes off.
These are great books and always fun to study more about them.
Several years ago my girls had the chance to look a few dormant volcanoes. We loved looking at the sizes and shapes of all the different types of volcanoes.
This painting project was a great way to explore what we learn then and what we learned about the Pompeii! And you could also do DIY volcano as well.
What you need for the Volcano Painting Activity
These are all the items we used to make this painting.
How we painted our Volcanoes
The first thing we did was draw with a pencil where the ground was and how tall we wanted out volcano to be. You want to leave space at the top for the exploding part of the volcano.
Then we started doing some watercolor painting. We started painting the ground and the volcano. The volcano we did a mix of browns and greens colors.
Then we finished the watercolor painting with the sky. We did a mix of blues from our sky.
We use the paint tray with a spread of the colors and white around so that we can mix the colors. You can see how we had a space to mix white and black to make a gray.
You can see how we use the q-tip to paint the eruption. This gives the painting a fun texture to the eruption.
You can see how the colors also mix on the paper. It is easy to change the colors as you go.
One of the final colors we added were reds, orange, and yellows for the fire part of the eruption.
