Building a Volcano with Vacation Under The Volcano
One thing I love about the Magic Tree House Books is that you can explore so many different areas in each book.
This book takes us to Roman times and in a place that is famous now for the volcano that destroyed it. You have a history of roman culture and learn about a volcano at the same time.
We had fun exploring volcanos and learning history at the same time as this week’s activity.
We have included links to some of the products and resources we have used with this activity. If you purchase via the links we may earn a small commission.
This week’s book is the Vacation Under The Volcano and you can also read Ancient Rome and Pompeii: A Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House 13: Vacation Under the Volcano. I love history and science we learn in the book.
I love that this book set is a start to a new series and learning. You have some historical stories you are looking for and in fun and different places.
You start in a roman town where you can see bits of history as it is being worked out. Plus you can see the part leading up to the volcano going off.
One figure from the book is Hercules. You can have some fun by writing a sentence about Hercules. I have a fun writing printable in my Greek Mythology Pack. I printed off a writing page and we wrote about Hercules.

How we did our Volcano Activity
Be aware that some clays can stain clothes so be prepared for that.
We started by building our volcano. We molded the clay into a cone type shape. She started by making the hole in the volcano.
Then we slowly molded it to the shape we wanted. She wanted a long skinny top to the volcano. We set the volcano aside for a few days so it could dry once we were done.
After you finish making the volcano, I would recommend putting paper on the bottom so it does not stick to the tray.
One it was dry and we did try and seal it some with mode podge. We filled it with baking soda and yellow and red food coloring.
Then we poured the vinegar in and watched the volcano explode!
We had loads of fun adding more baking soda and repeating the vinegar over and over. It was loads of fun.
