Geometry: Recycling Sorting By Angles
Earth Day has so many great themes for kids to learn with. And I wanted to add some more fun math activities they could do.
We have been working on angles in the last few months and I thought it would be fun to work on angles with a fun earth day theme.
So we have the free recycling sorting by angles activity that kids can do.
I know that my girls love hands-on activities as well as worksheets. And this is simple and easy to use. Plus this is perfect theme for Earth Day.
The printable in this set is focused on angles and sorting them for kids. This is a fun and easy activity to set up and do.
The angles in this set are acute angles, right angles, and obtuse angles. An acute angle is one that is less than 90 degrees. The right angle is exactly 90 degrees. And an obtuse angle is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees.
You have a sorting mat and 3 cards for each type.
The mat you can see below has the three angle types listed. We have our mat printed cardstock.
Then you have three cards for each angle. Each of the cards is on a type of item to be recycled. I recommend printing the cards on white cardstock and laminating them to help them last longer.

Ways to use the Recycling Angle Sorting
One way to start this activity if a child is new to angles is to help them understand the differences between angles. You can use the wall cards to help with this as well.
I use the square from the shape pattern blocks to help. I show them an angle and the pattern block. You tell them the square is a 90 degree angle.
They can compare the square with the angle.
You can also place the square on top to better see the angle. You can see this is an obtuse angle because it is bigger than 90 degrees.
As they pick up each card, have them say the angle on the item. So they should say right angle for this card.
Then they place them on the mat in the correct place.
When you are all done sorting. The mat should look similar to this. It will have one of each item in the different parts.
Now if you want to do some more sorting then use the shape pattern blocks. It is an easy way to see the different angles on the shapes.
