We have been reading the Magic Tree House books and it has been fun. We are doing a new activity with each book. We love the idea of treasure from the book. It was something fun to look for.

We talked about the treasure and how much fun it would be to count.

So I made a fun division activity for dividing up treasure!

We loved that in the Pirates Past Noon (Magic Tree House, No. 4) they talked about finding the treasure. We had a fun time talking about just what would the treasure be and how would Jack and Annie have split the treasure. So that is how this fun pirate treasure division sorting activity came to be.

This is a great addition to the pirate activities on the site.

I love having hands-on activities whenever I can do it. There are many ways to work on division but a hands-on approach is also fun.

There are three parts to this fun pirate treasure division sorting: the sorting mat, the recording sheet, and the task cards. It also has a set of printable gems you can use.

The task cards have two sets. Each set has 12 cards for kids to work on. They are a mix of multiplication from 1 to 12. I recommend printing them on white cardstock and laminating to help them last longer.

There is a sorting mat in the set. This has 12 treasure chests for kids to work on sorting in groups up to 12. I recommend laminatingthe mat to help it last longer. There is also a set of gems you can cut out and use with mat.

The set has a recording sheet to use with the 2 sets of task cards. They have space to write up all 12 answers for the cards.

How to use the Pirate Treasure Division Sorting Task Cards

I like to set the task cards and acrylic gems up ahead of time. We have a set of baggies in the house we use for these activities. Remember to reuse things when you can. I put the acrylic gems and matching task cards in the baggies together. You can use any containers you want for this. You can even have them count out the gems as they go.

If you don’t want to use the gems you could just put the cards on a ring. This makes it easy to store as well.

She pulls out the cards and gems. She puts the gems in the center of the treasure check mat with the task card.

She then reads over the question on the card. Each question is the same to help keep things simple for working on the activity.

Then she sorts the gems to each chest. This is a great way to see how you are making groups of the bigger number. You can see how it becomes several smaller groups.

After she is done sorting we can counting the chests that have our groups and then records the division problem.

If you just want to use the task cards and recording sheet you can do that. A great option for those just starting out is to use the multiplication and division number bond chart to help them see how the groups work up to the number. We keep the cart in our math help binder. You can see counting between each number and circle each time you reach another set of 7 up to the 35.

If you want to do beyond the task cards you can always pull out the division flashcards and use them. It works great for a sorting mat. You can also use it for multiplication cards as well.
