Kinetic Sand Space Moon Walking Sensory Bin

One thing I love about sensory bins that what is them and items can change it is still fun. We have done loads of sensory bins over the years.

With the moon landing anniversary coming up my girls wanted to do a moon-themed sensory bin. It is fun to put a little history in with our sensory learning.

There are so many great books about the moon landing that kids can read. One book we read with this sensory bin was Moonwalk: The First Trip to the Moon (Step-Into-Reading, Step 5). I love books that help us explore things before the sensory bin play.

We also just walked a documentary about the first moon landing, and it was amazing to see how it all went.

One thing I love about sensory bins is that they are great for open play. Kids can play any way they want and feel that they need it. We keep a sensory bin around a lot of the time.

She placed all the space items around. I talked with my youngest about what all the items from the Safari Ltd Space TOOB were. The figures have their names listed on them. She liked to group things together placing them in. So all the astronaunts were together.

She then took everything out of the bin and patted the area flat. It gave her a sensory input that she often needs. I love then this do this with the kinetic sand bins.

She took the space car for a drive making tracks in the sand. This was fun to see her do it across the bin and back.

Even though my girls are past the age of learning to write letters, they pointed out how fun it would be to write letters with the car and then did it.

She made impressions of all the space items in the bin in the sand. It was fun to see what items left what impressions in the sand. You can see below how she made the area flat again and pressed it into it.

She also had fun dropping rocks. She made a ball in the center with the sand and made the rocks be asteroids hitting the moon. It bounced off the sand and made fun noise in the bin that she loved.

She then had fun mixing up the sand and rocks and dropping that into the bin as well. She had fun coloring parts of the space items.

One of my favorite things about sensory bins is that they can pull it out and play when they want and then put it away and enjoy having the sensory bin to play in. Plus there is no right or wrong way to play in the bin.
