Watercolor Planet Earth Craft for Kids
I love doing planet Earth activities. They are a fun way to remember where we live and just how big our planet is.
Last year we did a finger-painted earth and had a lot of fun with it. We decided to change it up and do a watercolor Earth this year.
The watercolor Planet Earth painting is a great way to explore how colors spread in the water while doing a fun activity.
The Watercolor Planet Earth Craft is a great addition to the Earth Day Crafts on the site.
We have done several craft and painting projects similar to this. We have done planets and moons.
Watercolor Planet Earth Craft
But I always love adding a twist on how we make it. We have been having a blast with watercolors and different ways to use them and how it changes a project when you do it differently.
This Watercolor Planet Earth Craft is made with watercolors and oil pastels.
What you need for the Watercolor Planet Earth Craft
- watercolor paper with circle drawn on it
- watercolors
- oil pastels
- pencil
- glue

How we did the Watercolor Planet Earth Craft
You will see the steps below that we did for the Earth Watercolor Painting. Also check out this Earth Day Craft that goes great with this one.
Draw the Continents of the Circle
I made the circles on the watercolor paper before we started. That made it easy to just start into the project. We started right into drawing in pencil the continents on the Earth.
If you want an Earth template with continents to trace you can find it here in the Earth Fine Motor Mats.
Outline the Continents & Oceans with Oil Pastels
Then we outlined our planets in blue, white, and green oil pastels. This was to keep the water from mixing in different areas. We used white for the icecap and Antarctica.
Then we did the painting part of the project.
Paint the Earth with Water
We painted the area with just water. You fill in the whole area that you want to paint. You want it to be raised up a little bit and bubble in that area. We use a brush that is only used for water and keep that water and brush clean.
Paint the Earth with Watercolors
Then you add color to the Earth. You do this be painting watercolors in the water. You can do the area, draw lines or any way you want. It is fun to watch the watercolor spread. We used a mix of greens and browns for land and blue for the ocean.
Repeat until the Earth is Painted
You repeat the steps above for each area. It is fun to see how the color spreads through the water as you progress around the Earth. If your paper starts to curl up don’t be afraid to use something to make it stay flat.
Make the Space Background
We let our Earths dry for a bit and then started on the background. We use black glitter cardstock and made stars with a white sharpie paint marker.
Cut out the Earth
We then cut our Earths and glued them onto the paper. It is fun to see how the earth looks on the black glitter paper.
