Watercolor Flower Process Art
We have been loving playing with watercolors and oil pastels. They are fun to mix in how you paint and coloring with them. The theme of flowers has always been one that I have loved. A year does not go by that we don’t do something with flowers.
Today’s watercolor flower process art is a great activity for kids to work on tracing and fine motor skills while having fun with a craft.
I love flowers and flower petals. We are always looking for flowers in the spring and this is a great spring painting to do. We read the book Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden
What you need for this activity
How we did the painting
First, we drew our flowers on the watercolor paper. We used a can to make the circle in the center and then we drew out petals on the flower. Plus with a pencil, you can always redraw your lines.
We then traced the pencil lines with the oil pastels. We use the colors for the things we were going to paint to outline. We even made sure to outline the edges of the paper.
Then we did the painting part of the project.
We painted the area with just water. You fill in the whole area that you want to paint. You want it to be raised up a little bit and bubble in that area. We use a brush that is only used for water and keep that water and brush clean.
Then you add color. You can do the area, draw lines or any way you want. It is fun to watch the color spread.
You repeat the steps above for each area. It is fun to see how the color spreads through the water as you progress around the flower.
If your paper starts to curve you can always add weight somewhere on the paper to help keep it flat. We used the can we had for tracing. You can use weights on the corners while it dries also to keep the paper from curling.
