Easy to Make Phases Of the Moon Wreath
We love space activities and the moon is a great one because it is something you can always study no matter the time of the year.
We recently did the Moon Sequencing activities and loved those. We thought we would do another moon activity with this Phases of the Moon Wreath.
This is a great addition to the many space activities that we have done over the years.
The Phases Of the Moon Wreath is a great addition to the moon craft and space craft on the site.
We have included links to some of the products and resources we have used with this activity. If you purchase via the links we may earn a small commission.
What are the Phases of the Moon?
The phase of the moon is the four main cycles of New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter. There are four secondary phases Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous, and Waning Crescent.
What We Read With Our Phases of the Moon Wreath
For our moon wreath use the moon sequencing cards and The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons. We just love her information books.
Both are great for kids to see and learn more about the moon.
I love wreaths because you can be creative, and no wreath will ever look the same.
No two kids will paint or cut the moons out the same way. This can be as creative as they want it to be.

How to Make the Phases Of the Moon Wreath Craft
You can see the steps we used to make our wreath.
Paint the Wreath Black
The first thing we did was use the watercolor black and paint our paper plate. Make sure the paper plate you are using is paper like for the watercolors to work well. We also used watercolors because it dries so much faster than paint.
Painted the Earth
We used a circle cookie cutter for tracing the circle.
We painted our circle like the Earth. We picked a green and a blue to paint it with. It was fun to see how we each painted out Earths.
It does not have to look like the Earth close enough to represent the earth in the wreath.
After you finish painting the Earth and it is dry, you can cut out the Earth after. Watercolor dry really fasts if you don’t use lots of water.
Punch out the Circles for the Moon
Then we started making our moons. We used the circle punch to punch out 8 white circles and 5 black circles. You can have older kids do this or have it ready for younger kids.
We placed our white circles and made a circle shape. We used cardstock for the moons so it would be stiffer and easier to work with. Then we cut up for the black circles to make the different moons.
We used a full black for the new moon.
Then we did two with a small sliver off to make the gibbous moon and crescent moons. You will want two of the gibbous and crescent moons to make the full set.
And last, we cut one in half to make the quarter moons.
After you have all the black circles cut you glue the black pieces on the white pieces. You will then have 8 moons for the wreath.
Phases of the Moon Printables are also a great help in figuring out the order the moons and the moons you need to make.
Cut our your Earth
If you have not cut out your planet Earth this is a good time to do it.
Punch Holes on the Wreath and Earth
We checked to make sure the wreath and earth were dry and then we use a hole punch to punch 6 holes on our planet earth and 6 holes on our black painted paper plates.
Recently we found an amazing hole punch and just love it! Easy to use and easy to punch right where you want with guides to help kids.
Lace the Earth on the Wreath
We took the yarn and started to lace our earth in the center of the paper plate. We taped the yarn to the back of the paper plate to make it so the yarn would not come out while we were lacing. We worked on made sure the Earth stayed in the center while we did the lacing.
Glued the Moons on the Wreath
The last thing we did for our moon wreath was take our moons and glue them on the paper plate around the earth. You want to make sure you have the moons in the right order around the wreath.
And if you are doing souther hemisphere the moon order is different.
