One of our favorite subjects in the space theme is the moon! The moon and the phases of the moon is something you can study at any time and learn a lot from it! It is great science activity you can do.

I also like that you can watch the moon at any time during the year! It is a fun study that kids can have fun with.

I thought that free phases of the moon bookmark printable would be great to have while we study the moon. It gives them something to look at while we watch the changes in the moon.

My girls have been so excited about it looking at the moon. I thought some printable bookmarks with the different moons phases might be fun.

What are the Phases of the Moon?

The phase of the moon is the four main cycles of New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter. There are four secondary phases Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous, and Waning Crescent.

These moon bookmarks have all eight phases of the moon on them. You can use the four main phases of the moon or all the phases. The moon bookmark printables for kids has a Northern Hemisphere Version and a Southern Hemisphere Version.

Moon Books to Read with Kids

We have also been reading the book The Moon Book. We love all of her non-fiction books. They are great to learn with. Plus gives us details about the moon and the changes.

We are also reading Midnight on the Moon (Magic Tree House, No. 8). This gives us a fun fiction book to read.

How we used the Moon Bookmarks Printable

Flip through the Phases of the Moon Bookmarks

They flipped through phases of the moon bookmarks and looked at the different types of moons before we started our observations. There are two sets of the moon bookmarks: the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. I did want to try and make sure I got something for both.

I printed the ones that we would be using. These moon printables for kids are great because they are easy to keep track of and use.

We put moon phases on a ring to keep them together.

Put the Phases of the Moon in Order

We also did a moon activity for kids where you put the phases of the moon in order. You can use the bookmarks to put them in order. This works great in a pocket chart or on a table.

This also lets kids see how the moon changes and what that phase of the moon is.

Observe the Moon

Over the last weekdays, we started our watch of the moon for a month. It has been fuzzy and cloudy, but we have got to see it a few days.

Record the Phases of the Moon in our Moon Observation Journal

After we have been outside watching the moon, we head in and record the moon observation information about what we saw and the date.

It has been loads of fun to do. We also noted if the weather did not allow us to look at the moon. We drew clouds over the moon for that day.

This is a great way to see how the moon changes daily. We used colored pencils to color the moon.
