Puzzles have always been one of our favorite ways to begin to learn CVC word family words. The CVC short vowel A sound puzzles are great to work on learning words that are easy to sound out with that short a sound.

These were my youngest favorite CVC word activity that we did. Plus the CVC word family puzzles are great beginning reading activity. You can learn to build the words with pictures of the words.

What is a CVC Short A Word?

A CVC word is a word that has a consonant vowel consonant. And a few CVC family short a vowel words are cat, map, and cab.

CVC Short A Word Puzzle Printables

So these puzzles are made with short A vowel CVC words. You are going to find 16 short A puzzles for kids to build and learn short A words. You will find puzzles for the following short A endings: -ad, -ab, -ag, -am, -an, -ap, -ar, and -at.

You can see the each of the puzzles is cut into three pieces. You have a piece for each letter in the word.

I recommend printing these on cardstock and laminating them. This helps the puzzles last longer as you used them.

Ways to use the CVC Short A Puzzles

I want to show you a few ways that we have used these short A CVC puzzles.

You can start by building the puzzles. You can match the picture and then sound out the letters to say the word. You can see the CVC word puzzle for the word map.

Match Letters to the CVC Puzzle

You can build the puzzle and then match the lacing letters to the letters in the puzzle. It is another way to reinforce the spelling of the CVC word.

Match the Letter to the CVC Word

Write Your CVC Word Puzzle Words

You can print off the blank writing paper and write the CVC words that you build. This is a great way to work on spelling and writing of the CVC short A words they are learning.
