Making Penny Rubbings – Poppins Book Nook

This month’s Poppins Book Nook was Presidents. There are many ways to look at this. We did read several books and enjoyed them. But we saw one that we just had to read. It is called I am Abraham Lincoln (Ordinary People Change World). This is a series of books about ordinary people who changed the world. It is a great read for kids to learn about different people. I really liked this one about Abraham Lincoln. You learn about him and the things he did. We will be reading more from this series.

One theme throughout the book was that he would be on the penny.

What you need for this activity: pennies, paper and colored pencils.

We started by looking at the pennies. We looked at how different the front and back where. We also looked at the year. My youngest stacked her pennies and counted them.

We then stared our penny rubbings. It was fun to cover the pennies and find them. They picked colors they wanted to do. We talked about how you would have to hold the paper and penny in place.

After they got the hang of it they had a lot of fun just making the different rubbings.

After we finished we counted up the rubbings and made a math problem out of them for my oldest. They had 26 penny rubbings total.
