How we made the Winter Cardinal Craft
You can see all the steps below that we used to make the winter cardinal craft.
Paint the Background Blue and Purple
You start by painting the background. We used blue and purple watercolors. This mix gives the background a great color.
And remember if one is light and another is dark for the background that is all okay.
Paint the Trunk of the Tree
The next step is painting the birch tree that the cardinal will be sitting in.
You can draw lines for where tree truck is on the white cardstock. If you have older kids, let them decide where they want to paint and how big the tree should be.
You want to use the brush and paint horizontal lines on the tree truck to make it look like a bark of a birch tree.
Paint the Branch of the Tree
You will paint the branch similar to the truck of the tree. You are going to do black lines across to paper.
You can draw for them where they will paint or have older kids do their own lines and painting.
Cut out the Trunk of the Tree
Next you want to cut out the trunk of the tree. And remember no tree is straight and if there are a little curves that is totally fine.
Cut out the Branch of the Tree
You repeat like the tree trunk and cut out the branch of tree. You have a small skinny branch for the cardinal.
Glue the Branch on the Paper
Okay next you glue on the branch. You want it somewhere in the middle or lower part of the paper.
And it will only go about 3/4 of the way across the paper.
You can then cut the extra off the tree at the end if the watercolor paper.
Glue the Tree on the Paper
Next you glue the tree onto the paper. You can use a glue stick or glue. Which every you have will be fine.
Then you want to cut off the extra of the tree at the bottom.
Paint the Cardinal on the Tree Branch
The final step is to paint the cardinal on the picture. You a cardinal cookie cutter and then paint inside with a q-tip.
You use a bright red paint for the painting.
You hold on to the top or sides of the cookie cutter as you paint.
