STEM Challenge: Keva Plank Dominos
This year we have been doing something different after school. We have done tons of activities, but a lot of them have been just simple challenges to try something new of different.
Kids love to be challenged in fun ways. We have been using the Keva Plank Set. We normally do lots of building up or 2D images with them. This time we did something different by using them as dominos.
This was much harder than it looked. We had so much fun doing this activity. It was easy to knock over the planks and made you really think about what you were doing.
We did this as a small and large challenge for my girls. I even joined in!
What you need for this activity: Structures 200 Plank Set
Everyone gathered around the box and pulled out several of the planks. They each started their own line of planks. We learned really quick that it was hard to stand these on end than the dominos we have done before. The planks could wobble a bit and knock over the whole line you had set it. They each worked on their own way of standing them up.
We talked about how far we should space each plank after we all had tried it out for a bit. Everyone had their own ideas of what would and would not work. We talked about why they thought what they thought.
After they were able to do several straight lines we worked on making curved lines with them. This presented a challenge to them, but they loved it. We had to walk with tippy toes as not to knock over anyone’s line of planks.
It was fun to watch the planks go…even if is was not the planned time! Ops, here is one that went early.
Every one of the planks that fell, we had fun cheering for. It did not matter if it was big or small. It was fun to build their confidence in what they could create. I always make sure they knew this was a fun activity and to keep that way.
The final challenge they did was one long time of planks and they all worked together to build it. This was fun to watch them as they placed the planks and hoped that it did not get knocked over!
This was a great afterschool activity for us that my girls just loved. It was hands on and allowed them to be creative in their building and what they wanted to make.
Here are some other activities we have done with the Keva Planks:
Check back for more plank activities coming soon!
