Rainbow Fish Themed Gross Motor
This month’s Virtual Book Club book is The Rainbow Fish. It is a favorite at our house. We have loved this book for a long time.
One part I like about the Virtual Book Club is that I’m challenged to come up with something new each month for a book that we know or love. We really had fun with this one. We are on an ocean themed time at our house! This will be the first of many ocean activities to come this month.
We do these gross motor and book activities. I’m always changing things up. They enjoy doing the activities. The first time through we just practice the motions that we will be doing. The next time we do the motions while reading the book. The third time we call out our favorite movement to do! This gives you loads of practice doing the movements and getting kids having fun!
Plus I join in on the fun. It gets me moving with my girls. Plus makes for a great workout after you read the book a few times. Plus kids remember the activities and want to do them other times you read as well.
You can see the movements and descriptions below. It was so much fun to do this!
Rainbow Fish/ Any Fish
We did some various swimming Activities on the floor. We pretended to swim and move our arms and kick our legs.
Silver Scale
I asked about the scale and what my youngest thought it would be like. She said it would sparkle in the light. I asked her what movement would be like a sparkle. She told me jumping with arms and legs spread out is what it would look like. So that is the movement we did.
Starfish
With the starfish, we laid on the floor and open and closed our arms and legs. We did slow, fast and normal speed for the movements. This gave us some variety.
Octopus
The octopus was the favorite movement for this book. She loved doing it. We laid on our backs and wiggled our arms and legs in the air. This was tons of fun to do.
Seaweed
After we had read the book my youngest wanted to be seaweed as well. We added a movement for it. We made sure to keep our feet still and waved our arms over our heads side to side. This was silly and fun to do.

Oh that looks so fun! I think octopus would be my kids’ favourite move, too!
My kids love to move so we will be trying these out. We’ve read Rainbow Fish about a dozen times this week.
