Space Themed Hands-On Mat for Making IP Word Family Words
Building words has been one of the first activities that early readers work on. It is fun to change up how we do this.
Today is all about the “-ip” words. These are short vowel i words. It has CVC or CCVC words for kids to work on.
Plus this is a great addition to any space theme you might have going.
This is a great addition to CVC and CCVC word learning. CVC means Consonant Vowel Consonant. And CCVC means Consonant Consonant Vowel Consonant. These are the type of words that will be mixed in.
Most often the CVC words are ones that you can sound out. And the CCVC words are a mix of words with blends or digraphs at the beginning of the word.
You have the building mat. It has space for the word cards, building area, and writing area. I recommend printing this on
cardstock and laminating it. This helps it last longer.
You can see I put ours in a sheet protector (ps I am out of laminating pouches) . I having mine in a sheet protector and I also sort the cards in the sheet protector when we are done using it. I also printed out our laminating pouches to put them on. I love the fun mix of color spots to add to the space theme.
The next part is the word building tiles. These tiles match up to all the words on the cards. They have fun rockets on them to help you build the words.
The last part is the next of IP words to build. There are 16 different cards for kids to learn and make. You can use the cards at the level you are at.

How we use this Making Ip Words
I wanted to show you how I set up this printable as a learning center. I put the letters off to the side to build the beginning sounds. I have the cards stacked so they can go through them all. I also have the i and p set up for them to use.
You can have them build the word first. They find the matching beginning letter to the letter on the word.
After that, you can have them write the word on the mat with a dry erase marker. I keep an old scrap of cloth around to wipe off the dry eraser marker be between words.
Now if you want to have them keep a record of the words they built you can have them use writing paper to do that. We used one of the pages from the Space Themed Writing Paper.
