Hands on Learning: Patterns with Candy Land!
We have really loved having the butterflies we used a few days ago. They have been so much fun. I realized that the colors matched up to the ones in a game that my girls love to play: Candy Land!
This was a chance to turn that game into a fun match activity! This was a fun way to work on patterns with my girls. You could do simple or complex patterns.
We took the butterflies we use from the Butterfly Color Matching activity and use them for this activity as well. It was fun to be able to re-use something we had already made. Plus this gave a fun hands on activity for my youngest to do. She really love the game Candy Land right now. We play it often.
What you need for this activity: Martha Stewart Crafts Large Punch, Monarch Butterfly, construction paper and Candy Land.
We took the Candy Land cards and put them in a pile. My youngest would draw two cards from the pile and put them on the table.
Then she would make the pattern out of the butterflies. She had fun with it and loved how she was in charge of the whole activity. She did the picking and making. I got to set and watch her have fun with it.
There are so many different combinations of patterns that it is loads of fun to do. You can change how many cards you draw as well. You don’t have to limit your kids to just 2 cards. For my older girls I love to get them 3 or 4 cards to match the pattern.
This activity could be used with any type of color items. Here are some items that you could use:
- button punch or any of the punches
- pom poms
- cubes
- transparent color counting chips
- dot markers
- Glass Gems
This activity is easy to change up as long as you have the 6 colors. Plus it is super easy to set up! Since we had all the items it took less than 5 minutes to set the activity up. Easy and fun learning is nice to have.
